Networking Amigas
The idea of networking two Amigas together is simply to allow the conection
of two Amigas so that the resources on each machine are available to the
other. For instance the drives on one Amiga can be accessed by the other.
To take this a step further a CD32 or CDTV can be connected up to an Amiga
so that the Amiga has access to the CD drive on the CD machine. Data can
be accessed in a similar way to any drive on the Amiga except that the
networking software sets up a device called 'NETWORK:' and within this
device is a drawer called 'CD0'. So to access the CD on a remote machine
you would use the following, 'Network:CD0/'. Parnet uses the parallel
ports and Sernet uses the serial ports. This means that a CD32 would use
Sernet and a CDTV can use the faster Parnet.
PARNET.
To boot parnet, ensure the cable is connected to both machines and do not
plug the cable in with the machines switched on. Double- Click on Boot-Client
on one machine and Boot-Host on the other. Both of these are situated in the
Parnet directory. This will mount a device called NET: or Network: This
device can be accessed just like any drive, ie. DIR NET:cd0/ will bring up a
directory listing for the CD drive on the remote machine. Read the documents
included for more detail.
SERNET.
' ParNet is easy to start up - SerNet is a little more complex. To start
SerNet up, click on Sernet. This will open a shell window for output of
DNet's subtasks, and DNet's own window should open up, offering a menu
selection of Quit, SendBreak and Start DNet, via the right mouse button.
SendBreak clears the serial line, for setting up the connection, and Start
DNet kicks the whole thing off. If DNet connects to the remote machine, IE if
Start is selected at both ends, a chat window entitled 'FTerm' will open up,
for typed messages between machines. SerNet will then be mounted, as the
device SNET:
A shell is used as opposed to a normal CON: redirection, so new chat windows
and DNET control commands can be entered. FTerms can be fired up or closed at
any point once DNet is running, and will go alongside SerNet's operation. To
shut down DNet, either enter the command QuitDNet in the shell, or use Status
to list all processes on the system, and breaking DNet's process number with
every signal. For more information on the Shell and AmigaDOS, consult your
machine's AmigaDOS manuals.
All serial preferences for the various KickStarts on this CD have been set at
the fastest reliable configuration for DNet - 19200 baud, no parity,
Handshaking none, 8 data bits read/write and 1 start/stop bit. Set the remote
machine's serial preferences to match this to achieve the correct DNet setup.
To sum up Sernet, click on the icon Sernet on both machines, place the mouse
in the DNET window and click on the right button. Go up to the menu on the
left and select send break, then select Start DNet. It is recommended that
you do this on the master machine, (not the CD32). Several windows will open
and you can close this when the set up is complete. Then it is best to mount
the remote device with the 'MountRemote' icon provided. This gives you the
device SNET: or Network: and you can then procceed as per Parnet.

How to un-archive the Assassins Disks An explanation of the Archives
The Asi Games Disks,Utility Disks,Other Game Disks, have been archived onto
the Compact Disc using the DMS format. To unarchive them you will require a
blank floppy in Df0: If you have a CD32 or a CDTV and no floppy drive but
still wish to use the disks with an Amiga then you will have to connect
them together and use a @{" NETWORK " LINK "NETWORKS" 0} setup to enable
the two machines to communicate and Un-DMS the disks to the floppy on the
Amiga.
This Amiga Guide file will Un-DMS the disks for you, but only to Df0: on

THE STORY SO FAR
----------------
So who or what are "These Assassins"..... Well forget any threatening
insinuation from the name, we are a real friendly bunch of Amiga users
who have known each other for longer than some of us would care to say.
I think I can say in all honesty that we are all the wrong side of the
big 21...But then again that could be the right side...
As for the members names. The Assassins are.....
Bill Woodcock Bryan King Artie Carhart Stu Morton
(GRAPHICS) (COMPILER) (COMPILER) (CODER)
Well since the launch of Assassins games CD ( Ultimate Games Volume One)
and the good reviews we received from the amiga mags, and phone calls from
people who had bought our first CD,telling us how much they had enjoyed
it, And asking if we were planning to release another ASI Games CD.
we thought about it long and hard!! and remembered the late late nights
and nightmares of trying to get all the games to run on as many CD Drives
as possible !!!.But since we are a nice bunch of lads and always looking
forward to new challenge's and also suffer from short memories???,We set
to work on Volume Two in January 1995 with Bryan and Artie compiling the
Games and testing, bill drawing the Graphics for the Menus,Stu decided to
write a new Menu in Amos rather than use Interplay due to this program
eating up to much memory!!.We discovered this problem on the CDTV!!.Anyway
you will find that our new Menu is very similar in operation but with the
added bonus of a built in text reader for Documents, which is very handy for
people with just a CD32 and joypad!!
We would also like to thank Gary King for drawing the artwork for the
opening title screen, which once again is quite amazing!!!. Gary would
also like to point out, that he is very interested in swapping DC comics,
buying, selling, etc, which he has been collecting for many years!!,if you
are interested in this type of hobby then write or phone us, and we will
pass your details onto Gary.
Many thanks must go to Dave Gallagher for the rendered animation which he
kindly put together for this CD,
Nice One Dave.
Also many thanks must go to a very good friend of ours, Brian of Vally PD
for the supply of his latest PD,
Thanks Mate
We would also like to thank Escom for keeping the Amiga alive!!!, so lets
hope for another ten years of this great machine!!!
This Volume, features hundreds of brand new games, updated games,Two drawers
full to the brim with new WorkBench games, plus all our latest Asi Util
disks, latest Asi game Disks, plus Parnet, Sernet, also some ready to use
utils should you wish to transfer to your HD,etc. We have also included
some games from the first volume for some strange reason that refused to
work! we have now fixed these problems,We have also included a new section
in the Archives, called (Other Games) this section contains new games in
DMS format, which were not suitable for playing from the CD,due to them
either being in Non Dos format, are needing the Full 2 meg to run, etc,But
will load and run without any problems from the disks once un-archived.As
you can see we have tried to cater for just about everybodys taste from the
CD32, CDTV, A4000, A600, A1200, with either the Zappo Drive,Power drive,
A570,etc,etc,etc.
Projects in the Pipeline.
------------------------
Look out for our ASI Utility CD,which will be released early next year!!!!
if you would like more information on this release, then give us a ring!!
Stu is busy working on a shoot'up construction kit, which he is writing in
blitz basic, What i hear you cry!!!,but wait, this version has many many
more options over S.e.u.ck, Why bother!! well S.E.U.C.K was released over
five years ago without any updates to take advantage of modern day Amiga's
This game utility was also very limited to the type of game you could
create!!!,Well not any more!!, Stu thought it was about time to write a
new version that would be more flexible but still easy to use. Well
rather than waffle on about how good this Game-util is, As Actions always
speak louder than words!! Stu will be releasing a shareware version very
shortly into the public domain, just to give you a taster on what this
game creator is all about!!!
For all the new Amiga users out there, who have never heard of us, then
please Read on if you're curious as to how we came about!!.
THE STORY CONTINUES!!
Basically we knew each other way back in the days of the good old C64.
But the group started around 1988 when Bryan and Artie met up,then Bill
and Stu completed the group in 1989.As we all moved over to the amiga,
we started to collect quite a few public domain disks between us.So if
you are quite new to the area of Public Domain, things are a lot different
now. We were all used to paying quite a bit of money for a disk somewhere
in the region of 3-4 pounds only to find that the disk was sometimes not
even a quarter full. Together we thought it would be a good idea to try
and compile these disks for ourselves with a easy to use Menu and so that
is how it all began. With us all being in regular contact with various
Public Domain libraries etc,we sent them copies of these disks,in exchange
for a new game or whatever... Soon we were being asked by these libraries
if we had done any more compilations and from there we just kept on
swapping and compiling. Slowly we noticed that more and more Public Domain
libraries were stocking these disks and they were becoming a bit of a
talking point. This was not something that we intended but was nice to see
anyway.
I hope you agree that each and every one of our compilations are good
value for money. I also believe that as these disks are now so popular
that they will also benefit the games programmers. This is likely because,
Public Domain programmers will get there works seen by hopefully a bigger
audience and even Shareware titles will be a lot better distributed and
maybe attract more registrations etc. We have good relations with quite a
few of the better known games programmers and they seem to be happy with
the situation and for us to use their programs. As you can imagine we must
get all these games from somewhere, this is where all of our friends and
contacts come into it,So if it wasn't for their help and that of the
programmers you wouldn't be reading this waffle. So even though you all
get a mention in the greeting section, in our Catalogue Disk I would like
to take this opportunity to thank you all for everything...
If you would like to obtain further ASI disks or would like to know about
the ASI user group then contact Stu for further details at the following

This text was written by Jeff Minter
(Good old YAK)
----------------------------------------------------------
SHAREWARE: WHAT, HOW, WHY....
All commercial games are designed for a theoretical entity known as Darren.
Darren is a spotty 14-year-old male who doesn't get on that well with people,
so he spends all his time in his bedroom playing games on his computer.Darren
is easily impressed by graphics and music, and he doesn't really want to learn
anything really tricky - as long as it has Ninja Hampsters in and works with a
Kempston, that's OK. Somehow he can persuade his Dad to fork out 25 quid once
every few weeks for the latest version of R-Type with different graphics on
his Amiga, don't ask me how. Either that or he waits and hits up his mate
Wayne for a pirate version in a couple of weeks' time.
Consequently, it has become much harder for programmers to retain their
creative integrity and earn a living too. It is virtually impossible for a
small independent developer to get games out to the people without first
hooking in to one of the larger companies for distribution and advertising,
and those larger companies tend to want stuff that's very normal,
spaceship-and-alien stuff, no llamas please and not too weird.
However, with popular disk-based machines, the idea of Public Domain programs
has really come into its own. PD libraries give access to a large amount of
free software. PD is usually sub-commercial stuff, often good utilities but
without the 'polish' of commercial versions.
It would be nice to use the existing PD libraries to distribute software to
anyone who is interested, and make a bit of money too - and that is where
Shareware comes in.
The principle of Shareware is simple. The game is distributed by the PD
libraries, by uploading onto BBSES and giving copies away. Users can get a
complete version of the game just for the price of the media, and then take
it home and play it. If the user likes the game, he sends the author a
Shareware fee. Usually, the author will send back a few goodies (as an
incentive to register) and, if enough people send in the dosh to make it
worthwhile, he may do more Shareware stuff.
Naturally you don't have to pay anything if you don't like the game. Of
course a lot of people might like the game and decide not to pay, but if too
many people do that then nobody will ever bother doing any decent Shareware at
all, and it's back to Darren's 25 quid games. So, it's down to the users - if
they're honest, then programmers will be more inclined to work hard on
Shareware releases.
The idea of Shareware is very idealistic, perhaps impracticably so, but the
advantages over the conventional videogame market are so enormous that I
thought it had to be tried, at least once. The response from this experiment
will determine whether or not I will release any more shareware.
Advantages of Shareware:
1- It is a totally honest way of selling. All users can try the game and only
those who get hooked are morally obliged to pay the fee. Nobody is
disappointed or feels ripped-off.
2- There are no constraints on creativity. No-one says 'we cannot publish
this because it ain't mainstream'. Programmers do what the hell they like and
the users vote with their Shareware fees.
3- Anyone can play. The mechanism of distribution is already in place in the
form of PD libraries. All the originator has to provide is a disk to each of
the PD libraries with game and documentation. So if you have good stuff it
doesn't matter if you aren't signed to a major label - if it's good, it'll
get passed around the PD scene; if it's bad nobody will bother with it. The
author could be working for a company or coding in his bedroom; the potential
for distribution is the same. Forget spending thousands on adverts trying to
convince people to spend lots of money on a game they haven't even played
yet...
4- The concept of piracy becomes null. All that business of hacking and
cracking doesn't apply to software which is both free and unprotected.
Shareware authors WANT their software to be spread and copied. If it gets
onto a BB in America and spreads all over the US, well and groovy! Good
Shareware exports itself!
5- Prices can be way low. Since the authors have no overheads in terms of
production and advertising, they don't need to ask as much in payment. And
the users pay the programmers directly - nobody else takes a cut. 100% of
five pounds is better than 5% of twenty pounds.
The advantages of Shareware as a democratic, honest way of publishing
software are pretty obvious, but it does have to go both ways.If a programmer
puts a lot of time and effort into his code and releases it as Shareware,
he's trusting you, the users, to be honest and pay him if you like his
program. If you all just skive off and take the stuff for free, he won't
bother to do any more stuff. If you support the author, he'll be inclined to
do much better next time - and you'll be the ones to benefit!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope old YAK won't mind the use of this text, but the text was so good
that I just had to use it.
